Balinese Culture 101: Ceremonies, Offerings and Etiquette
23 October 2026 4x Culture, Travel Tips
Most Balinese follow Agama Hindu Dharma, and religion shapes daily life across the island. Understanding a few customs helps you travel respectfully.

Everyday traditions
- Canang sari: Small woven offerings placed on pavements, shrines and doorways each day. Step around them.
- Temple ceremonies: Villages hold frequent festivals. If a procession passes, give way and stay calm.
- Dance and gamelan: Performances such as Legong and Barong are part of religious life as well as entertainment.
Temple etiquette
Wear a sarong and sash, cover your shoulders where asked, and never climb on shrines. Women who are menstruating are traditionally asked not to enter inner temple areas.
Nyepi
Nyepi is the Balinese Day of Silence. For one day the whole island stops: no traffic, no flights and no lights outdoors. Plan ahead if your trip overlaps with it.
